SOUL IN SADNESS was founded in 2000 and until 2002 all their music is created independently, being spread through the internet. After winning a newcomer contest associated with a recording day with Bruno Kramm (DAS ICH), they signed a label deal with UpScene and released the first of two ‘Sehnsucht’ albums called ‘Sehnsucht nach dem Licht in June 2003, followed by ‘Auf Sehnsucht folgt Ernuchterung’ in November 2004. After numerous delays, the new album ‘Zwischenwelt’ will finally see the light of day on 10th October on Danse Macabre.
‘Zwischenwelt’ begins with ‘Prolog’ which is initially carried by brittle chime melodies before orchestral strings are played over it to be followed by male choirs. The title ‘Prolog’ wasn’t chosen by coincides as it’s blending with the very first song ‘Zwischen Hier und Leben’ starting even more monumental than we experienced it with the intro. Hard guitars and fast drums kick in. The sustaining element in the songs of SOUL IN SADNESS always is Stefan Siegl’s expressive and emphatic chant captivating you time and again. ‘Silent Situation’ comes in with English vocals and a flute, very unusual for Goth Rock as far as I know but I think it puts a unique element on top of a song. ‘Can you hear me can you see me?’ he sings in one line and the pain in his vocals sounds absolutely honest to me. Wave-like guitar play and oppressive strings guide us into the world of ‘Third Eye Blind’. Sonorous and sublime Siegl’s vocals glide through the lands just to extol for a deep chorus. ‘Sometimes I feel like the world outside runs much to fast…” and there’s barely any consideration for those who can’t catch up, you’re feeling left behind and sometimes this enduring feeling can make you really sick. In case I haven’t mentioned it yet, the song’s name is ‘Deadnettlepan’ and besides the already known guitars and the wonderful flute, an acoustic guitar joins in this time contrasting the harshness of the metal-like riffs.
In a society where the look is more important than what’s on the inside, the soul is slowly drained of its power until it’s nothing more than a crippled entity, being not able to love anymore. A terrible vision isn’t it? And probably it’ happens many times out there. We should really think about a change. Again fortified with many electronics, ‘Tote Seelen lieben nicht’ proves to be of a of a much harder nature, lyrically as well as musically and integrates harder metal elements like the drum gallop with the screeching Black Metal vocals, sounding like a tortured soul, halfway through the song. During ‘Visions’ the voice of insanity breaks forth and the amount of the hard Metal elements even has increased. The last regular track ‘Von Anfang an’ sounds like a relief manifesting in one special person which able to calm the storm inside his mind, to be the light safely guiding you through a stormy sea - a charming acoustic-oriented ballad. As bonus you can find 3 remixes of 3 album tracks. One of them was created by TRANNSIT POETRY, where Stefan is playing the guitar, but in this remix there’s no guitar to be heard. TRANSIT POETRY made e genuine electro pop number out of ‘Zweiter Weg’ which highlights the mellow face of the song and it’ll surely work out well in clubs.
The fans had to wait a long time for a new album of SOUL IN SADNESS, but hence they’ll now be rewarded with a lyrically and musically appealing album worth the waiting which will apparently stay in their players for a very long time.
