Stunning series of Bollywood Compilations
Over the past few years, quite a few compilations of jaw dropping music from the magpie world of vintage Bollywood soundtracks have boggled the minds and frazzled the ears of unprepared listeners, but on the evidence of it's first two volumes, the Bombay Connection series promises to outdo them all.
Put together by Dutch crate diggers Edo Bouman and Milan Hulsing, these records have clearly been a real labour of love for the pair, who first had their heads turned around a decade ago, when they chanced upon the soundtrack to Hare Rama Hare Krishna in a second hand record shop. Totally entranced by the wild and eclectic mix of sounds that emerged from the speakers when the record was spun, both embarked upon a personal quest to seek out the finest nuggets from the Indian film music industry.
Whilst past Bollywood compilations have gathered together some fantastic tunes, one of the main complaints has been a distinct lack of sleeve information. To say this is not a problem that this series suffers from is a major understatement. Each record is illustrated with a mouthwatering collection of stills and film posters, as well as pictures of and stories about the composers and the industry they worked in. In addition to this, there are also notes on each individual track, the films they are drawn from and lyrics to the songs (in both Hindi and English!). Obviously, the dynamic Dutch duo have picked up some serious expertise during their search, and are thankfully willing to share it. (...)
Despite the inclusion of "Jaan Pehechan Ho" from 1965's Gumnaam (watch this clip at
Both these compilations are top notch introductions to the wild world of Bollywood sounds for anyone wishing to take the plunge, and have left me drooling in anticipation of the forthcoming four further volumes in the series.
